The Heartbreak Kid

ROMANTIC COMEDY; 1hr 56min

STARRING: Ben Stiller, Michelle Monaghan, Malin Akerman

Burn baby burn: Stiller and Akerman

Ben Stiller could have been purpose-built to play a dismayed klutz — and as San Francisco sports-store owner Eddie, he has plenty to work with. Eddie, his live-wire father (Stiller’s actual father, Jerry Stiller) and his henpecked best friend (Rob Corddry) are mutually stoked when Eddie meets and, in short order, marries what seems to be his dream woman (Akerman). But from day one of his Mexican resort honeymoon, Eddie discovers that he and his sunny bride have a laundry list of differences. Then presto: he meets the girl he patently should have married (Monaghan as Miranda).

So Eddie is a naughty boy: with his sunburned bridezilla confined to their suite, he is free to play with the unsuspecting Miranda. You can’t condone his misbehaviour, but in the nimble hands of brothers Peter and Bobby Farrelly (There’s Something About Mary), putting their out-there stamp on a retooling of the 1972 original Kid, and a game for anything cast, you also can’t help but go with the frothy ebb and flow.
