Since anything is theoretically possible in dreams, the ability to manipulate other people’s could give a person a high-risk power especially hazardous to themself. That’s the launch pad for the spacey maze of The Dark Knight film-maker Christopher Nolan’s Inception, a conceptually remarkable and eye-popping Rubik’s Cube in which the actual and the unreal intersect to form a strange consciousness—and which is ultra-high-maintenance as it thunders along.
An on-edge DiCaprio (great, angsty value as Dom Cobb) and his hotshot associates (Gordon-Levitt and Page among them) are spies of the dreaming mind; their morally questionable specialty is the stealing of their subjects’ ideas. His thieving genius has cost Dom dearly. To redeem himself, he takes on the extreme task of planting a life-changing notion into the psyche of a wealthy young target (Cillian Murphy).
No thumbnail sketch can encompass the bravura mayhem of this chock-full-of-itself behemoth as it twists into a minefield of buried dimensions. Staying the long-drawn-out course takes serious focus and the concertinaed logistics might not be everyone’s head-trip. But they do pull all stops out in trying.
