The World’s End

SCI-FI COMEDY; 1hr 49min

STARRING: Simon Pegg, Martin Freeman, Nick Frost, Eddie Marsan, Paddy Considine, Rosamund Pike

Creepy crawl: from left, Frost, Pegg and Considine

Twenty years after their high-school graduation’s glory pub crawl, Gary (Pegg), Oliver (Freeman), Andrew (Frost), Peter (Marsan) and Steven (Considine) have long gone their separate ways. Unlike the other four, who have settled into to staid middle age, Gary is still a tragic wayward teen. With brass-balled force of will, he cajoles his ex-friends back to their home town of Newton Haven to finish the 12-stop crawl they didn’t quite make it through the first time. But early on in a predictably flat exercise in futility, the playing field revolves into the freaky. Incredibly, dullsville Newton Haven has been taken over by “robots full of blue stuff.” And they can’t wait to recruit the lads...

What’s not to like about a bunch of drunk guys mixing it up with soul-sucking aliens? With a cast this cluey and a slick script from director Edgar Wright and Pegg, who previously collaborated on Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz, not much! Pegg, in particular, has a mad affinity for a fruity mash-up. His Gary is a Duracell Bunny with a battered heart.
