Zootopia

ANIMATION; 1hr 48min

VOICES BY: Ginnifer Goodwin, Jason Bateman, Idris Elba

Crime busters: Nick (Bateman) and Judy (Goodwin)

In the Disneyfied, candy cane–spired, multi-species city of Zootopia, predator and prey live cheek-by-jowl and "anyone can be anything," especially short-stop rabbit Judy Hopps (voiced by Goodwin). Judy comes top of her Police Academy class. But cynical buffalo Chief Bogo (Elba) is in no way ready for a sunny bunny. "Life isn't some cartoon musical where you sing a little song and your insipid dreams magically come true," he huffs. (That's how they tend to talk in these parts.)

Bogo consigns Judy to the limbo of parking tickets, which she aces but hates. So when she gets lucky with a missing-otter investigation and 48 hours to close the case, she needs all the help she can muster. Which is where foxy con artist Nick Wilde (Bateman) comes in, and what a scintillating A-team they make.

Aside from one cracker scene with a sloth (Raymond S. Persi), the sleuthing is an express ride, its marriage of funny, fully adult characters with endearing, eye-grabbing animation hands-down family friendly. Even the obligatory message is served with a side order of ring-a-ding-ding. Ka-ching.
